New ICC Chief Prosecutor

The International Criminal Court has a new Chief Prosecutor, Ms. Fatou Bensouda, who was sworn in today during a ceremony in the Hague. At a time when the ICC is seeking to prosecute a number of high-level accused, from Saif al-Islam Gaddafi to former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo, this marks the first time an African or a woman will hold the Chief Prosecutor position. In addition to her work as deputy Chief Prosecutor of the ICC from 2004 to 2012, Ms. Bensouda has also worked for the Interntional Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, and served as Attorney General and Minister of Justice in her native Gambia.
